In class: Students have begun a study on still life drawing. They learned lot of still life vicabulary today and did a drawing excersize in which they could only draw the contour lines objects that touch negative space.

Homework: 1. BOYS:  Finish butterfly of rememberence

2. GIRLS: do a negetive space drawing of 1 still life object of your choice. The more difficult the better!

3. ALL: Review new art terms :

Still Life Vocabulary

Inanimate-objects that cannot move on their own

Elements of design-line, shape, form, value, texture, color, space

Contour lines-defines the edge and surface ridges of objects and figures

Depth-illusion of distance in the drawings

Proportion-size relationship between objects

Value-gradation from light to dark (at least 5 different values should be seen)

Composition-How the principles of art (balance, variety, harmony, emphasis, proportion, movement, rhythm, unity) are used to organize the elements

Contrast-great difference between light values and dark values

Light source-determines were the light and dark values fall on objects, as well as which direction the cast shadows fall

Viewfinder-a small opening cut out of a piece of paper, used to help organize that composition of the artist’s drawing.

Point of view-angle at which the viewer sees as object or objects

Symmetrical Balance/Formal Balance-composition in which two halves of the design are identical

Asymmetrical/Informal Balance-composition where two halves of the design have the same visual weight, but are not identical

Overlapping-when an object partially blocks the view of another object.
