Fire

I slept so near the fire
That I couldn’t feel the heat,
     I couldn’t smell the smoke,
     I couldn’t see the flames.

I was the fuel for the fire,
     the wood for the flame,
     the coals for the heat.

The radiance burned away my fears
     and melted my heart
It in-fired me to burn brighter
to shoot out my own hot sparks.

For days afterward
Stray thoughts became my tinder
Causing the fire to light in me again
Feeling like I would burst at any moment.
